The Collection

The collection on display was assembled over more than four centuries through testamentary bequests and donations: paintings and furnishings were given to the Pio Monte to be sold, raising funds to be devoted to charitable works.

Since 1914 the practice of auction sales has been discontinued, as the institution decided to preserve its own artistic heritage, enriched over the course of the twentieth century by several important donations, up to the most recent works of contemporary art.
