The Picture Gallery, also called The Art Gallery, is in the rooms of the historic apartment located on the main floor of the building. These spaces were created in the seventeenth century to accommodate the administrative activities of the institution and for centuries they were used only by the Governors and Associates of Pio Monte della Misericordia.
The highly evocative rooms display furnishings of various historical styles and manufacturers, a rich and valuable collection of paintings from the end of the 15th to the 21st century, including Mattia Preti, Massimo Stanzione, Luca Giordano, Andrea Vaccaro, Jusepe de Ribera and 40 canvases from the donation by the eighteenth century painter Francesco De Mura.
In 1972 this private collection of Pio Monte was opened to the public for the first time and, since 2003, it has been accessible to all visitors with a new exposition layout.
The collection on display was formed over four centuries, thanks to bequests and donations, as the paintings and furnishings were given to Pio Monte to be sold and raise funds for charitable works.
Since 1914 the practice of auction sales has been interrupted, as the organization decided to preserve its precious artistic heritage, enriched during the twentieth century by some important donations, including the most recent works of contemporary art.
